Foods to Fight Inflammation
Inflammation is a topic discussed more and more these days. Why? Because the ease at which it is caused, the damage it can bring to the body, and the many ways to avoid it simply by the foods you eat!
A few things that inflammation can be causing: -Trouble with sleep -Poor digestion -Muscle pain -Lack of energy/brain fog -Cancer (inflamed organs can be very harmful) -Spinal misalignments (which can result in all of the above, and why getting regular adjustments are crucial to overall health)
Our nutrition is so important. We want to focus on real, whole and fresh foods we can find at most local stores or markets. This is the foundation for an anti-inflammatory diet.
When discussing this topic with our patients, these are some of our most recommended foods:
Turmeric, Fatty Fish, Blueberries, and Kale - just to name a few.
Let's break them down.
Turmeric - is the active ingredient in curry, a spice that has been used within Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. This spice has a wide range of health benefits, and when combined with Curcumin and Black Pepper is intensified in its properties. Several studies have compared turmeric to ibuprofen for treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee. Curcumin (an extract cucuminoid of turmeric) supplements were found to be as effective as ibuprofen, but with almost no side effects and toxins taking over your internal system.
Fatty Fish - our last article discussed the importance of eating the right fish and getting the appropriate amount of Omega-3s vs Omega-6s. Omega-3 supplements are recommended to patients to help reduce pain and inflammation if fish consumption weekly is not at option. The results of reduced inflammation are higher and faster when Omegas are incorporated into the diet.
Blueberries - one of the most popular superfoods, blueberries are packed with flavinoids that hold strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These superfoods also help with brain activity and cognitive function. Also, eat these ORGANIC!
Kale - this green power packed food is a must because of its ability to protect the body against cellular damage that can cause inflammation leading to cancer and other ailments.
Shopping and finding the right foods can be a challenge for many people. Packages are misleading, articles are misinterpreted, or key facts are just not given properly for many to know the harm of some foods we eat. We can be causing extreme inflammation to our bodies without even realizing it until dis-ease arises.
